Roboraptor
Roboraptor
The Roboraptor is the latest in robotics technology. This is a really clever dinosaur, which you are able to control using a very intuitive remote control. With incredibly realistic motion you can make the roboraptor search, run, hunt or even play!
All his body parts are fully independent, he can turn his head and neck, swing his tail, and use it to attack or defend.
Roboraptor has three mood settings; hunter, avoidance, or play. How the roboraptor reacts will depend largely on its mood settings; in “attack” mode if you were to present your hand or another object it will be likely to bite. However, in “play” mode the roboraptor will nuzzle the hand or object. It is this flexibility of behaviour that separates this robot from it’s predecessors.
This sophisticated piece of equipment is so advanced it using sound and visual clues taken from the surrounding environment to guide interaction. Infrared sight allows roboraptor to avoid objects when running, or when the object is moving towards him. There are additional sensors in his mouth and tail. Bite an enemy; or use his mouth to pick up objects.
Wowee have designed a number of other robotic toys including the, Robosapien v2, RS Media RoboSapien, Roboquad, Alive Chimpanzee, FlyTech Bladestar, FlyTech Dragonfly, Robopet, FemiSapien, Robopanda, Roboboa, and Roboreptile. Please watch this space for forthcoming reviews.
We got hold of a couple of these roboraptors to test and see if they lived up to the hype. While this is essentially a child’s toy it did fulfill nearly all of the promises made by the manufacturer; you can indeed run and hunt, the tail will whip, we had a game of tug a war using the animals jaw to hold the rope. The kids loved them and this is certainly a massive leap from the old style plastic molded dolls with maybe one moving part. In fact we found the roboraptors encouraged very imaginative and novel play. Our only hesitation would be the price; at just under £90 this is a very expensive toy, but you can pick one up for less than a third of that so we give it an enthusiastic recommendation!
If we had to be super critical then there are a few points that should be made; first of all this is a toy! It is a fantastic toy but you are not buying “wall-e”. The roboraptor did struggle a little on very shinny surfaces such as polished tiles or laminate floor boards. Don’t try and use cheap batteries this requires a lot of power and only alkaline will suffice. Also after a couple of hours use the batteries will run down and affect the roboraptors performance; the walking and running speed are most noticeably affected. This is just roboraptor’s way of tell you he needs new batteries!
